Symptoms

A numeric value is outside the allowed range for its type.

  • The error is written to the server log and returned to the client carrying SQLSTATE 22003.
  • Any driver (libpq, JDBC, psycopg, npgsql, pgx) surfaces this code in its error object so you can branch on it programmatically.
  • PL/pgSQL can trap it by name: EXCEPTION WHEN numeric_value_out_of_range THEN.

Environment

Severity: ERROR  |  PostgreSQL versions: 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17

Reproduce with the exact statement and read the full message in the server log (raise log_min_messages / set log_min_error_statement for more context).

Root Cause

The value does not fit the target numeric type, or its precision/scale.

Common causes:

  • A value exceeding integer/bigint range.
  • Overflow during arithmetic.
  • Too many digits for numeric(p,s).
  • Assigning a large value to a smaller type.

Diagnostic Queries

Recovery

Steps to resolve 22003:

  1. Use a wider type (bigint, or numeric without precision) for the column or expression.
  2. Validate input ranges in the application.
  3. Increase numeric(p,s) precision/scale to fit the data.
